Using Realia to improve the learning of básic vocabulary in fifth graders

Abstract

Using Realia to improve the learning of basic vocabulary in fifth graders is a study based on the Jean-Pierre Berwald work, “Teaching Foreign Language with Realia and other Authentic Materials”. This study was carried out to improve the English level in fifth graders in Jorge Eliécer Gaitán School, located in Tuluá. In brief the principal objective in this study is contextualized the daily life of the students with English classes; focused on the learning the basic vocabulary, also using the simple grammatical structures spontaneously, allowing to work interesting topics for the students and the cultural exchange. Some real objects used to reinforced English classes were maps, flags, candies, clothes, the house objects, and cards for special days, songs, and magazines.

Usar Realia para mejorar el aprendizaje del vocabulario básico en inglés en los estudiantes de quinto grado, es un estudio basado en el trabajo de Jean-Pierre Berwald, “Teaching Foreign Language with Realia and other Authentic Materials”. Este estudio fue llevado a cabo para mejorar el nivel de inglés de los estudiantes de quinto grado del colegio Jorge Eliecer Gaitán, ubicado en la ciudad de Tuluá. Es así como el objetivo principal de este estudio es contextualizar la vida diaria de los estudiantes con las clases de inglés, enfocado hacia el aprendizaje del vocabulario básico, usando también de manera espontánea las estructuras gramaticales simples, permitiendo trabajar temas interesantes para los estudiantes así como el intercambio cultural. Finalmente algunos objetos usados para las clases de inglés fueron mapas, banderas, dulces, ropa, objetos de la casa, tarjetas para fechas especiales, canciones y revistas.
