| spa |

| dc.description.abstractenglish | The accelerated urban development following the Industrial Revolution has posed critical challenges in mobility and road safety. Traffic regulation formally began with the emergence of the traffic light at the end of the 19th century, evolving from manual and automated systems to current intelligent solutions that integrate sensors and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms. This technological evolution primarily seeks to optimize urban flow, reduce congestion, and enhance safety for all users.
In this context, the present study aimed to design and implement an intelligent prototype for vehicular traffic control within the campus of the Unidad Central del Valle del Cauca (UCEVA). The project addresses the necessity of regulating flow at campus access points, where the lack of clear signage and adequate priority systems leads to frequent congestion and poses risks to the university community's safety.
The methodology was structured into four essential phases: problem diagnosis, system design, development of the detection model via computer vision, and experimental validation. The YOLOv5 architecture was selected and trained for real-time vehicle identification, with its execution managed from a Linux Ubuntu server. Communication with the ESP32 microcontroller, which controls the physical traffic light. is established through the MQTT protocol.
The results validated the system's efficacy: a 92% accuracy in vehicular detection was documented, alongside a significant 60% reduction in waiting times compared to a fixed-cycle traffic light system. The prototype successfully demonstrated the viability of integrating AI and IoT in university settings to optimize internal mobility and energy efficiency.
It is concluded that this system represents an initial milestone in the implementation of intelligent infrastructure at UCEVA. As a recommendation for future work, prioritizing the optimization of communication latency and extending the detection capability to include pedestrians and motorcycles is suggested. | spa |
